Grammar and usage: Linking verbs (Pp. 40 – 41)
Objectives:
- My students will talk about an Internet debate.
- My students will review what a linking verb’s function is in a sentence and what verbs can be used as linking verbs.
- My students will be able to use the linking verbs through different kinds of tasks and language practice.

Activities
1. Review: the pros and cons of the Internet
In the reading selections in this unit, we have learnt the positive and negative effects of the Internet. Now, I’d like to give you three minutes and then, please tell me the pros and cons of the Internet using your own language. Of course, you should not refer to your book while speaking.

2. Reading a diary
Read the diary of Part A (page 41). See if you can find out the answers to these questions:
1) What is the writer’s feeling? (The writer felt tired, but happy. He also admired the boy he debated against.)
2) What is the writer’s attitude to the Internet? (He is sure that if people use the Internet in an intelligent manner, the Internet can be a good tool.)
3. Identifying linking verbs
Underline all the linking verbs used in the diary. If you are not sure about it, study the explanation on page 40 by yourselves.
Have my students read out the passage and give the class the answer. Analyse some uses of the linking verbs if necessary.
4. Language practice
a. Rewrite sentences using linking verbs
Have my students finish Part B (page 41) by themselves. Then check the answers in class.
b. Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the linking verbs
